Every year on April 15, the Major League Baseball commemorates the breaking of the color barrier by Jackie Robinson by having all the teams wear Robinson's jersey number, 42. This tradition began in 1997 and has continued to this day. While Robinson was still playing baseball, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Therefore, every year the Dodgers request to have a home game on April 15 to honor Robinson.
Also on this day, the Dodgers hand out 42 college scholarships through the Jackie Robinson Scholars program. In 2012, the Foundation recognized seven Scholars who were attending Robinson's alma mater, UCLA.
